Our History

After graduating from Clemson University in 1972, Marty Cope spent nearly 10 years in and around the Charlotte construction market before striking out on his own.
1972 – BEGINNINGS
J.M. Cope was founded by Marty Cope, a firm founded on a solid foundation of integrity, quality, and faith.
1980 – LAYING DOWN ROOTS
The first computer was introduced into the office and was used only for accounts payable.
1985 – STEPPING INTO NEW AGE
First $1M project awarded.
1992 – GROWING BANDWITH
Largest Project to date at that time: Moss Justice Center Expansion/Renovation in 2008 – $11.3M.
2008 – PROJECT MILESTONE
After 30 years at the helm, Marty passes the reins to his son Andrew Cope. Andrew grew up in the business, learning from an early age what managing a successful company required, while also gaining invaluable real-world experience that sparked a life-long passion for the construction industry.
2011 – THE NEXT GENERATION
J.M. Cope expands into North Carolina.
2012 – EXPLORING NEW TERRITORY
Firm team grows to 50+ employees while remaining committed to values.
2016 – GROWTH SPURT
Firm rebrands to better reflect company’s innovative and family culture.
2017 – PUTTING ON A FRESH FACE
Charlotte Business Journal recognizes J.M. Cope as one of Charlotte’s largest general contractors.
2019 – HARD WORK RECOGNIZED

Company opens offices in Charlotte, NC and Greenville, SC.

2020 – EXPANDING THE FIRM’S FOOTPRINT
Now, as CEO, Andrew continues to affirm a commitment to the same core values his father embedded over 40 years ago. Supported by a strong leadership team led by President, Wesley Drummond, today, J.M. Cope is recognized as one of the region’s most well-respected commercial construction firms in the Carolinas.
